Открывающая альбом "Ballad of a Well-Known Gun" представляла собой не столько балладу, сколько не очень быстрый, но горячий рок, надстроенный над синкопированным фортепьяно Элтона. В тексте песни речь идет о бродяге, который лишился всего, и уверенный вокал Элтона выражает негодование, вызванное поведением бегущего от опасности изгнанника. Фортепьяно Элтона вторит звучание группы "Hookfoot". Соло-гитара Калеба придает песне щемящую остроту, раскрывая изворотливый характер главного героя, который скрывается от правосудия. Партию бэк-вокала исполняют, помимо прочих, Лесли Дункан и Дасти Спрингфилд. (Незадолго до этого Спрингфилд встретила взволнованного Элтона за кулисами концерта ВВС "Pop Proms" и похвалила его "Border Song").

Следующая песня, "Come Down in Time", - это запоминающаяся мелодия в раскованной аранжировке Пола Бакмастера. Она не имеет никакого отношения к прошлому американского Запада или Юга и повествует лишь о потерянном шансе возможных любовников. В конце один из них остается "считать звезды в ночи". В следующей песне, "My Father's Gun", рассказывалось о гражданской войне и о судьбе южан. (Берни всегда был на стороне проигравших.) Песня начинается тихими и как бы не уверенными фортепьянными аккордами, вызывающими ассоциации с духовными песнопениями американских негров, а также приглушенными  звуками акустической и соло-гитары Калеба. Голос Элтона вначале тоже приглушен, но постепенно он крепнет, и в нем начинает звучать гнев молодого человека, у которого убили отца. Бэк-вокал Дасти Спрингфилд, Десли Дункан и других передает силу духа, характерную для времен Гражданской войны. Песня заканчивается продолжительным, напоминающим музыку Нового Орлеана диалогом между голосом Элтона и голосами бэк-вокала, в который вплетаются звуки рожков и хонки тонк – непритязательной фортепьянной музыки, обычно исполняемой в барах.

Вторая сторона диска начинается с мрачной "Where to Now, St. Peter?", представляющей собой размышления о тех, кто отошел в мир иной. Солдата убивают в бою, и он испытывает странные ощущения. Между записью и выпуском альбома "Tumbleweed Connection" прошло несколько месяцев, заполненных другими законченными проектами, разочарованиями и планами на будущее.
