Альбом "Elton John" сулил множество приятных впечатлений. Он открывался будущим хитом "Your Song", начинавшимся с фортепианных аккордов и голоса Элтона – очень похоже на пробную запись, хотя вступавший через несколько тактов оркестр развивал невинные романтические темы песни.

Следующая композиция "I Need You to Turn To" начинается с вокала и клавесина, а затем мелодию незаметно подхватывают струнные. Старинное звучание песне придает не только клавесин или арфа, на которой играет Скайла Канга, но и сама мелодия, которую вполне можно поставить в один ряд с "Greensleeves" – балладой, входившей в репертуар трубадуров XIV века. Третья песня, "Take Me to the Pilot", начинается так же, как и первые две, с голоса Элтона и фортепианных аккордов, но еще до бравурного вступления оркестра мелодия резко меняет свое направление. В стихах присутствует множество элементов: предательство, политическое или личное ("государственный преступник"), иллюзий опасности ("через линзу") и бесстрашие перед неизведанным ("отведи меня к кормчему твоей души"). По словам Элтона, эта и другие песни цикла были навеяны научной фантастикой, которой в то время увлекался Берни.

Следующая песня "No Shoestring on Louise", - это непритязательный срез жизни в стиле кантри и вестернов, а также еще один образец дани "Rolling Stones". Если песня и похожа на композицию " Rolling Stones", то только хриплым голосом Элтона, имитирующим притворное южное произношение Мика Джаггера, к которому он иногда прибегал.
